MAC/PC COMPUTER FILE FAQs

GRAPHICS
Save as .tiff, .eps, jpeg, or .pdf format files. Images must be editable in Adobe Photoshop. Image resolution should be minimum of 300 dpi (600 or higher dpi is ideal) for continuous tone images. When saving a Tiff image, set the byte order to Macintosh with LZW compression off. Crop and/or rotate images in Photoshop, rather than in the layout program to reduce file size and processing time.

TRAPPING
In QuarkXPress, set your trap value to .144 pt. In Pagemaker it should be .003". Strokes should be .25 pt in thickness (at the final printed size).
InDesign trap value should be .144 pt. The objective, in all cases, is to create 1/8 to 1/4 point of overlapping color.

MAC/PC Color Files

You can keep production time and costs to a minimum by following these basic guidelines for preparing and sending your Mac/PC color and image files.

USE THESE APPLICATIONS
DLJ Studios uses Macintosh computers. The applications we support are intended to function in both the Macintosh and PC (Windows) environment, but there are limitations. To avoid added expense, we strongly recommend you originate your files on a Macintosh, as you will be charged for time spent correcting problems encountered on PC only files. Final document should be composed in a page layout program. Photoshop files should be placed into the final document as a TIFF or JPEG images. Please use Quark-Xpress or InDesgn for page layout applications. Edit graphics and images in Adobe Photoshop. Please include all originals when applicable.

BOOKLETS / MULTIPLE PAGES
To allow universal corrections, booklets and multipage brochures should be created as one document in either reader's or printer's spreads.

BROCHURES WITH MULTIPLE FOLDS
Compose panels with sides that vary based on the folding scheme and paper weight you are using. For example, in the case of a standard trifold (three panels per side), three equally sized panels will not fold properly. The panel that folds to the inside must be at least 1/16" shorter than the remaining two panels. Paper heavier than 80# text will require a 1/8" shorter panel.

SEND US YOUR DOCUMENTS
Your finished Macintosh files may be sent to us on disk, by e-mail, or to our ftp site (call 607-745-8988 for secure ftp uploading information). Electronic files should be compressed with Stuffit, PKZip or ZipIt to reduce file size and to protect them from being contaminated during file transfer. Business cards and post cards are great for uploading to our ftp site. For larger jobs we recommend that you place the job on a disk and deliver it to us. We will return all disks and materials at the end of your job.

CHECK IT OUT
The following is a checklist of what is needed from you to begin printing:
1. QuarkXPress/InDesign finished page layout.
2. JPEG, PDF, EPS or TIFF format images (Cropped, sized, rendered and ready to print.)
3. All fonts used in the page layout (Acceptable formats are Type 1 (both bitmap and an outline file), or Truetype. Please include full families of fonts (i.e. Times Roman, Times Italic, Times Bold, and Times Bold Italic) if they are used. DLJ Studios can not accept Multi-master fonts.
4. Hard Copies IMPORTANT: Send us your own printed version of your files so we can accurately determine your intended results. We prefer color prints, but B&W laser or ink jet prints are acceptable. If you send us an electronic file, please fax or snail mail a copy of your document(s).
5. RETURN YOUR PROOFS: A digital color proof is included in the price of your job. We must have a signed copy of this digital color proof returned to us before we can begin printing.

DOCUMENT AND BLEED
Your final layout should match the dimensions of the printed piece. (Ex: Business card is 3.5"x 2", Letterhead 8.5"x 11"). If there is a bleed, extend the elements that will print to 1/8" beyond the document edge on all sides that bleed.

COLORS
For file conversion, either RGB or CMYK, please call for specifics for your job. Define any spot colors by PMS number. In all files, remove any unused colors from the pallet.
