Artist's Statement (Davey's Resume)

I create these digital collages and watercolor paintings because I feel that there is a need to express to the viewer that we can each develop and enjoy our vitality, eros, sadness, and maturity but also to not lose our childlike insight and purity of the world and ourselves. Exploring the aspects of purity and individuality we as a community have come to tolerate. This is a time to venture - bold and confident - into these bands of light which bind our cosmic selves and continuities. Discovering and healing our wounded, darkened organs, behaviors, and sights, accepting and living with our judgments, abilities, chiaroscuro and expanses.

My current artwork deals with the figures and spaces encountered in everyday life - a mythic epic into undefined spaces. Figures that have their own lustrous, beautifully established dichotomies: eros/purity, contusion/health, sadness/happiness, and tranquillity/vibrancy. These figures are dream creatures - part human, part animal. It is an attempt to express through these figures and spaces a re-definition and de-construction of "dark" icons into a sense of understanding, contemplation and sensitivity - a translation of identity into restorative illuminance and healthy maturity. The spaces that these icons and figures inhabit, both physical and sensed, are bedrooms, shade gardens, sanctuaries - places of reflections, intimacy, and safety, yet are unknown and unexplored for the figures and the viewers alike. These quiet, seemingly aquatic spaces embody sparse memory and dense reflection - arenas of inner turmoil and sadness - reverberate and resonate the figure to the bone. Regardless of ability or density I feel these figures and spaces take on a quality of floating, swimming, and skimming: symbolic of Shinto energies and Zen enlightenment, meditative astral travel, and cosmic kite flying. I want to reveal the energy of the beings who are running, slipping away into the slivers and hot spots of the light.

"The Milkmen" Series

These new paintings define a new personal mythos as I embark on new and tumultuous - yet soothing and calming - Zen Buddhist horizons. The Greek kylix (the three handled jar) in the paintings represent my own personal "religious" trinity: man, fetish, and balance. The trinity between Zen, Anima, and Atlantis is also represented in my work. The urns are not only vessels for the "milk of life", but reflective cavernous pools into the energies and spaces of the body. The men in the paintings represent symbols of adoration, fetish, and desire.

"die flüssigkeit raum" Series

Die flussigkeit raum, loosely translated from German as "liquid spaces", is my experimentation into digital photography and collage. These images are a further exploration of oddly juxtaposed architectural spaces, light, and everyday creatures, such as flowers, nature, prehistoric trilobytes, fossils, honey bees and algae.
